Adventures Down Under - Part 10 - Abel Tasman National Park Hiking to Picton

Finally made it to The Barn Backpackers after the 7hr (or was it 8?) drive from Fox Glacier as the sun was setting.  We had dinner at The Park Cafe before turning in for the night.

The next morning we jogged to the water taxi office to snag last spots on the 10:30am ride to Anchorage beach.  Our captain showed us Split Apple Rock and some cute seals lounging around near of the islands.

The Anchorage drop point is about a 3-4 hour hike back to Marahau (12.4km hike).  We walked along the beach for a bit, and then took a side hike to a pretty point then started on the trail.  Today was one of the few amazing weather days for us in NZ.  It was lovely.  I saw tons of my new favorite things, fern trees!  There are several species all over the country.  The beaches and scenery were amazing.  We hiked pretty fast that day and made it out in 3 hours.  The tide had gone out and the tidal area was huge.

Our post hike pizza and beer was much deserved.  Since driving the campervan on windy small NZ roads takes longer than you think, we decided to get cleaned up and forfeit our second night at the Barn so we could be closer to the ferry ride the next morning.  Sadly we did not get to stop and see our New Zealand train friends in Nelson as we rushed through it.

Mind you most highways here are one lane each way with sporadic slow car/passing lanes.  If there is a wreck, be glad you have a campervan because you will be there a while.  Well, 9km from our Picton holiday park, we came upon an accident sign in the road and were at a complete stop for over 30 mins as we waited for police to clear the accident.  We made it to our last camping site (Top 10 Holiday Park Picton) on the south island and then hunted for food.  Picton is not a happening place at night so we found what seemed to be the only place open that late, an Irish pub!

Next up, North Island!
